  • Speaker:  Dave Patzwald
  • Vice President, Information Technology, North American Operating Division
  • Schneider Electric

  • Dispirited staffers, downsized IT departments and burned out bosses have become the unhappy reality for too many companies. When CIO Dave Patzwald joined Schneider Electric North America three years ago, his IT staff had one request: "Make this place fun again."  Knowing that happy people at work can make a huge difference, Dave took on the challenge. He put his MBA in marketing to work for him, partnered with an old friend who was a professional comic, and injected humor to drive change.  The antics included a movie featuring Dave himself dressed as a monk to an entertaining series of videos about dealing with PC issues and email overload.  In this morale-boosting presentation, Dave will explain how to unleash the creativity of your IT staffers, lift people's spirits with good humor and ultimately transform the geeky, unapproachable brand of an IT organization.

    Making IT Fun Again

    By Kristin Burnham, CIO, IDG
    Published: May 28, 2009
Whether it was his dressing in pumps and a skirt for the company's Halloween party or distributing bobble heads of himself, Dave Patzwald's IT department knew the change they were yearning for had come. "I inherited an IT department that was dispirited by rounds of outsourcing and canceled ERP projects. They weren't feeling respected or recognized," he says. "When I was hired three years ago, they pleaded with me: 'Dave, please just make this place fun again.'" And that's what he set out to do.

  • As one of the largest online brokerages in the U.S., Scottrade offers real-time, low-cost trading in stocks, bonds, mutual funds and more to consumers. But with 2,500 employees in more than 400 branch offices, the business of communicating the latest compliance updates, competitive intelligence or other useful info was becoming unmanageable. The answer for CIO Ian Patterson was to launch "The Insider," an employee portal packed with wikis and blogs, expertly authored by company insiders. "We truly have metrics around what we've done, and we track the traffic on the portal," Ian notes. "We're really getting value here." In this joint presentation, Ian pairs up with his director of portal applications to explain how this highly affordable approach to internal communication is delivering solid metrics and measurable business value to Scottrade.
